Today we moved from Wolhusen to Sigriswil. The bigger centres close by the villages would be Lucerne to Interlaken or Thun. We took part of the Scenic Golden Pass Trainline which makes the journey from one city to the other into a great experience. During a train ride of roughly two hours, we saw crystal clear mountain lakes, rivers and waterfalls. There were steep rock faces of the surrounding mountains and snow capped peaks. It was breath taking. Most passengers were out of their seats straining to take videos and pictures as we went. When it begins its steep, winding ascent to Brünig Pass, the train changes to cogwheel drivetrain technology in order to conquer the gradient.
It is such a beautiful trip that I’m trying to talk Jim into getting up early and doing the circuit back into Lucern again and returning to Interlaken, just to have another look. I’d do it again in a minute. *(We ended up not doing that because the scenery here is breathtaking too.)
It was mid-afternoon by the time we got to Interlaken. We jumped on a bus to take us to our Airbnb so we could get rid of our bags and start wandering. The day was warm – no jackets and sunny…..perfect for exploring.
The view from our place.
I did lots of planning for this adventure and I picked Sigriswil as a home base for a few reasons. It’s a smaller centre, way less touristy and less costly. It also is 1/2 way between Interlaken and Thun and I couldn’t decide which centre we would spend more time in. It is on the sunny side of the valley so it’s warmer and sunnier. The community has a small Swiss spa that they allow day guests to visit and use spa facilities. It is a little town, high up on the side of a mountain with a lot of climbing to get anywhere and very limited shopping or restaurants but it fit us to a tee! We dumped our bags, unpacked and starting exploring the village.
Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and warm followed by a day of rain so we’ll head out early in the morning and make the best of our day of good weather.
