We headed back into Naples today -NOT on the infamous Circumvesuviana train. We actually met a couple last night that were heading back to Naples to fly back to the US and they had booked a town car – they invited us to go halves and join them and we did. Perfect. We had an interesting young driver who lived in Pompei and talked about what it was like living in the red zone of an active volcano his whole life. I can’t imagine – although he has never seen snow and “can’t imagine” either. We could see Mt Vesuvius most of the drive looming over the area. He said it’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of “when” the next eruption will be.
We only stopped in Naples long enough to try the famous “World’s best” pizza (it was delicious!) and then catch the high speed train to Rome
We were extra excited to be heading back to Rome today as Heather and Brad are joining us there! Yeah!!!💕💕We are so happy to have them here with us. What a treat.
Jim and I got in a few hours earlier than Helgason’s plane so we got to our Airbnb and got settled in. There are a million stairs again but it’s cozy once you get up to it and I think will serve us all well. It’s only 3 minutes from Piazza Nervona so we have lots of history and amazing sites nearby.
They arrived. After unpacking and settling in, we went for a walk and found a nice restaurant to have some zucchini flowers and some pasta. For dessert we found a delicious gelato stop and ordered way too much!!!
We know our time sharing Italy with Heather and Brad is precious and short so we planned an itinerary that allows us to highlight and learn about the “show-stoppers” in each city we don’t want to miss but also allows us time to stroll, discover, and enjoy these beautiful cities and being together.
In Rome we chose the Colosseum, Palentine Hill Roman Forum, and the Pantheon to explore with a guide and The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Campo de Fiore, Piazza Nevona and wandering to do on our own – Day 1. Our guide for the tours couldn’t have been better. So knowledgeable and such a great sense of humour-he educated us and entertained us at the same time. We were able to include the dungeons and the underground in the Colosseum tour – so unbelievable!
What a great first day together. Sore feet (Grandma anyway) but a great first taste of Rome. The weather was warm, crowds were more than I thought they’d be for off season-but manageable. Gelato and company was great!
I was in Rome as a teenager and saw all the same things you shared pictures of. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Love it.
